I spent my first two nights in Christchurch here as the other hostels were full. My flight arrived a midnight, and the Base has a 24-hour reception. Base Hostels are known throughout Australia and New Zealand for their nightlife, as they all have their own bar. The atmosphere is young and crazy. The best thing about this hotel is its location, 10 metres from the Cathedral and 50 from the InterCity bus stop. I'd recommend it only if you're a party lover and under 25.
This hostel is in a family home and it is an extraordinary place. The awesome atmosphere in this house so nice, just 20 meters from the sea, to or from the supermarket and the office of tourism. The owners are great people, they were travelers around the world when they were young. Sarah the owner is a very nice woman as well. You can not pay by credit card. The place is extremely cozy, with terrace, hammock, simple socializing as many people traveling alone here. My bedroom had 5 available bed. I highly recommended place for both travelers and couples traveling alone. They also have rooms with two beds or a king-size bed. My bedroom and was almost 25 NZ dollars, about 12 euros and a person.
As a hostel, it might perhaps not be the best YHA in New Zealand, as it is a bit small. However, it does enjoy an excellent location, just a few meters away from the sea with great views of the mountains, and is a 20 minute walk to see a colony of seals and 10 minutes from the town center.
This is one of New Zealand's best hostels, with a very attentive staff, completely devoted to giving you the best service even though you only paid 10 €. It offers two full serviced floors with 2 kitchens, 2 laundry rooms, 2 living rooms, and it's just a short walk from the heart of Christchurch and the Cathedral.
The Tulsi is one of the many Indian restaurants in Christchurch, but it is different because it has modern and elegant décor and amazing prices at noon. You can order a curry with rice and naan from 4 €. It is in the center of the city, next to the most popular bars and clubs, and close to the YAG. The menu has a wide variety of curries, I recommend the chicken with mango, and the Tikka Masala is a house specialty. The Lassi is also highly recommended.
An extraordinary Hostel in Mount Cook, belonging to YHA Hostelling International. This Hostel is of a great quality, wooden house, family atmosphere, great facilities, good kitchen, bedrooms, very clean bathrooms, and a place to socialize. Only 5 minutes walk from the tourist information centre and museum tribute to Edmund Hilary, its definitely a great place to explore the area. Lots of lone travellers, the views are spectacular.
The Hororata Hotel is a historic building built during the gold rush over 100 years ago. The hotel has 8 rooms, and the most popular is the pub where you can play darts, pool and with all the amenities common to an English pub. It also has a huge garden and a 90000m2 mini golf course.
One of the best places to relax in New Zealand. It is a former railway station which was converted into a country hotel in a chalet, and the backpacker hostel is located on the top floor of the garage, offering 10 very comfortable beds and a common bathroom. The owner, Tony, is a charming man, always very helpful. The common areas are spacious, and there is a barbecue in the garden which in good weather is delightful.
A YHA hostel which usually accomodates most trekkers who hike for several days in the park. The hotel has extensive information about the National Park and the atmosphere is very quiet, it doesn´t even have a TV.
AMazing Hostel YHA network of Hostelling International, stunning situation within 5 meters of water and with amazing views of the ocean and mountain, is in the ride, in front, from the town center and bus stop have a 15 minute walk, the place is very nice, clean and well equipped, and has oceanfront rooms.
It's a shame that the rooms are too small for the 6 or 8 bunk beds that they have and that they are made with metal with the infamous continuous creeking noise that they make. A part from that the hostel is perfectly located on the edge of the lake, and the facilities are very good. The bathrooms are spotless and they have large gardens with BBQ facilities and hugel tables made from pieces of timber.
Just 5 minutes south of the village of Kaikoura is a campground that is situated next to the beach and one of the most suitable places to see the lovely sunrise on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. In the campsite there is room for tents and also about 10 booths. You have hot showers, toilets and washing machine with dryer. There are places to have a picnic and barbecue, among other things.
The last night I spent in New Zealand, I slept in a hostel for backpackers called Jailhouse. It has recently become well-known. It is about 25 minutes walk from the train station and about the same from the center of town. It is an old jail, built in 1874. There are single, double, triple and quadruple rooms and family rooms with 5 beds. You can also get rooms with a double bed. There is a small theater upstairs, a kitchen and internet connection.
L'Hotel Le Restaurant Le Bar is a hotel that can be found right on the sea, by the sea, with bar and restaurant, all in clear French influence, both in the menu and in the way they dress the waiters, with their long aprons.
Waipara is situated 60 km north of Christchurch, at the junction of Highways 1 and 7 in the North Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand. The Waipara region is known for its wine production and also for a charming area called "Waipara Sleepers" (Waipara dorms). The bedrooms are old train cars, the first three of which arrived in 1990 becoming the pride of Waipara after leaving the tracks of the main line. Currently there are twelve cars. But these are not any cars, they weigh 15 tons each and are the old mail coaches that were located at the end of each train. The interiors have been changed as little as possible to make way for certain amenities while retaining the atmosphere of the old trains. Some have more amenities than others, like heating and other equipment, single, double or dormitory type of accommodation. The focus of the camp is the train station, where one can make use of a fully equipped kitchen to cook and where the owners offer freshly baked bread every morning. In addition they also offer fresh eggs and other products. The Waipara bedrooms also offer the opportunity to camp with your own tent. The ablution facilities are very clean and well equipped with hot showers. Prices for this fun yet peaceful experience are ranging from $ 60NZ (about 30 Euros) to 15NZ $ per tent. The service throughout New Zealand is excellent, very friendly and cordial. The region also offers amazing wineries, the beautiful Waipara River and a ride on the historic Weka Pass Railway. Definitely a place not to miss.
